Clad materials are also called clad metals.

Making a composite material by bonding different property metals, the materials can get specific properties which cannot get from simple solo material. In this page, we will introduce the construction and the production method of precious metal clad materials which are used for material of electric contacts.

What is the construction of clad materials?

Clad materials are produced by bonding different metals in high pressure at high temperature condition.

By this process, these different metals are metallically bonded, and they get strong combination.

As for precious metal clad, you can reduce costs by cladding precious metals in only necessary area as precious metals are expensive. We mainly produce these clad materials.

Wrought copper such as pure copper, phosphor bronze and brass are mainly used for base material. Available precious metals are Gold, silver, and Au-Ag alloys.

You can design the thickness of precious metals freely, and produce a thick precious metal layer by this method which general plating cannot produce.

Sometimes Au alloys or Ag alloys are bonded, because clad materials made of pure gold or pure silver get worn by friction used as contacts for a long time. By alloying Au or Ag, you can maintain properties of gold or silver, improve friction resistance, and keep stable properties for a long term.

Other than precious metal clad, we can produce clad materials combined nickel or aluminum.

We produce clad materials by bonding more than two metals in the following processes below:

  1. Cleaning surface of the bonding materials.

    Passive films on bonding metal surface may cause bad adhesion, so we clean or polish the surface before cladding.

  2. Adhering materials

    We bond materials with high pressure at high temperature condition.

  3. Heat treatment

    Bonding layer will be diffused by heat treatment, and it makes more solid bonding layer.

  4. Processing into designed dimension

    We roll and process materials to the designed dimension.

    By repeating rolling and annealing, we can produce less than 0.1mm thickness clad materials.

    To meet your requirement, we consistently manage the process from design to production by ourselves.
